2020: YEAR OF THE CAREGIVER
Caregiver of the Month
Hi, I am Rico. I am an 11-year old, bi-lingual Golden Retriever hailing all the way from Puerto Rico! Yes, I understand sit and sentar.
I am named after my homeland! I want nothing more than to make you feel better. I know what it is like to feel bad. You see, I survived two major hurricanes which were very strong and destructive. I was wandering the flooded streets of Puerto Rico when I was rescued by some wonderful humans. Weighing only 40 lbs. -- I was so stressed out -- I chewed my way out of a kennel! I ended up in a Rescue Center for Golden Retrievers in Chicago where I completely recovered. How lucky I was!
This very nice lady named Ellen, who recently lost her Golden named Draper to cancer, adopted me and brought me to Michigan.
Ellen learned about dog therapy when her own neighborhood flooded in 2014. She was walking with Draper shortly after the storm and noticed a woman sobbing on her porch. Draper approached her and made her feel better. After seeing Draper's positive effect on her neighbor, Ellen took him to Dog Therapy training and did the same with me! You see, we dogs really do care about how you feel!
Ellen's philosophy is that dogs make your house a home and we bring a lot of fun to life! Boy that is a tall order but I am up to it thanks to the love I am receiving from Ellen and all the people we visit.
I especially enjoy visiting St. Anne's Mead! Here, I receive so much love and attention from other caregivers and residents, I have to go home and take a nap. But don't worry, I will be back next week!
